TRANSITIONS TO COLLEGE Math
Course Description
This course will fulfill the requirements for the articulation agreement with MCC. Students who take this course and pass with a “C” or better will be allowed to enroll in any 100 level course available to them if they meet the requirements established by MCC. The first portion of this course will cover operations and applications dealing with integers, linear equations, ratios, proportions, exponents, polynomials, factoring, graphing linear equations, graphing linear inequalities, and solving linear systems. The remainder of the course will cover problem solving, factoring, rational expressions, graphing, rational exponents, radicals, logarithms, and quadratic equations. All students will take the same semester exams as given to MCC students in the equivalent courses. Graphing calculator required: TI-83 or TI-84
* This course will be accepted by MCC in place of 095 and 099 only if results of the Compass Test places a student at the level and the student earns a grade of “C” or higher on each semester exam. The semester exams for this course are excluded from the exemption policy currently in place for Seniors. Students are not exempt from semester exams for this course. ALL STUDETNS WILL TAKE SEMESTER FINALS FOR THIS COURSE – NO ONE IS EXEMPT FROM FINALS IN THIS COURSE.
Students taking this course should take the Compass Test at the end of their junior year for placement.
1. If a student places into MCC’s Math099, then (s)he is eligible to take the entire year of Transition to College Mathematics with no further math placement test at MCC, provided the student earns a grade of C or better in Transition to College Math each semester.
2. If a student places into MCC’s Math095, then (s)he is eligible to take the entire year of Transition to College Math with no further math placement test at MCC, provided the student earns a grade of C or better in Transition to College Math each semester. If the student receives a grade below C for the first semester, then the student must re-take the Compass Test at the beginning of semester 2. At that time, if (s)he places into MCC’s Math099 and earns a grade of C or better for the second semester of Transition to College Math, then the student shall be permitted to take one of the following credit-bearing math courses at MCC with no further math placement test:
a. MAT120-General Education in Statistics
b. MAT150-Elements of Mathematics
c. MAT161-College Algebra
d. MAT165-College Algebra and Trigonometry
e. MAT201-Math Foundations for Elementary Education
3. If a student places into MCC’s Math090, the student is eligible to take the Transition to College Math course but will have to re-take the Compass Test in the middle of first semester. If the student receives a grade of C or better during the first semester, re-takes the Compass Test, and then places into MCCs Math099, the student must then complete the second semester of Transition to College Math with a grade of C or better in order to be permitted to take a 100-level math course at MCC with no further math placement test.
ALL STUDENTS WILL TAKE SEMESTER FINALS FOR THIS COURSE-NO ONE IS EXEMPT FROM FINALS IN THIS COURSE. This exam must count at least 15% of their final semester grade. This exam is provided by MCC to be administered by District 156.
